What are your views regarding the permission given by President Barack Obama to build a mosque near ground zero in New York?

President Barack Obama says Muslims have the right to build a mosque near ground zero in New York. He said Muslims have the same right to freedom of religion as everyone else in America. "As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country," Obama told an intently listening crowd gathered at the White House Friday evening to observe the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. "This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable."

Obama's position is exactly what it should be. A few people being offended doesn't justify government action to block an entirely legal action.

In any case, judging anyone by what a few extremists who hold similar beliefs are willing to do is silly, as there's nutjobs of every shape and color out there.

My position is that community leaders should have appreciated the concerns of the majority of it citizens that the mosque be built. There are several hundred mosques serving NYC Muslims, and to consider all the alternative sites it is questionable why this site was chosen.

Lastly, the empty rhetoric by the politicians that by allowing the mosque built at this location will "show the world what a open country and diverse country we are".

The US does not have to show any people, in any nation the kind of nation we are. For more than one hundred years we have done the heaviest lifting in the cause of freedom and liberty, so no symbolic
gesture is needed.

While the Moslem world stood on the sidelines, the US saved Kuwait. Nough said...

Well he just said they had the right to do it, which I don't even think was in dispute. Yes, we all know they have the right to do it, but should they? Even Sarah Palin mentioned this in a recent facebook post, but how can this mosque encourage cross culture talks, when before its even been built its having the exact opposite effect.

The President did not give permission or endorse the Community Center (it is not a Mosque, nor is it at Ground Zero - it's 2 blocks away at a Burlington Coat Factory department store). He simply stated the fact that in this country ALL are entitled to Freedom of Religion and popular opinion does not get to change that.

It is only a very loud MINORITY that wants to oppress the Freedom of Religion of Muslims in this country, not the majority. Most of us understand that Islam did not attack the US, a few extremist crazy people did.

They have every right to build the Community Center, Mosque, or anything they sit fit - their 1st Amendment rights are not up to a vote. America must hold fast to the values that this country was founded upon, freedom is not free, and it's not limited to when it's comfortable to Christian or secular society.
