When I first heard about the TV Series Sister Wives I have to admit that I was stunned that such a show was being created for television. Don’t get me wrong I knew there were those practicing polygamy were out there, but I never thought that someone would actually want to broadcast the fact that they practice this on nation wide TV. After all this is considered against the law, and I was even more surprised that the cable network The Learning Channel (TLC) Would actually want to air this show.
I know that reality shows are getting pretty sensationalized, but I wondered if this was taking it too far. Of course there have been a lot of criticism over this show, and of course a lot of jokes have been made about it. What I have seen of the show really made me shake my head. I know this is a way of life for some, but I had a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that this man Kody Brown could have three wives and thirteen kids at home but was out dating the woman who would apparently become number four. This just wasn’t something I could bring myself to understand, but I guess it was just the way I was brought up.
Sure enough my suspicions were warranted because now the Brown family is under investigation for breaking the law, although Kody Brown will swear that only the first marriage is valid the others were only commitment ceremonies. However, the law in the state of Utah could declare the other marriages legal as well by declaring a common law marriage. So the Brown family remain under scrutiny.
I guess this sort of life style really shouldn’t be depicted in a reality show. It’s probably better off being portrayed in fiction such as the HBO series Big Love. If you want to find out more about the production of Sister Wives you can go to its wikipedia page at:
