What are your thoughts on the Haiti earthquake conspiracy that is now floating about?

I saw a discussion on another message board that USA is being blamed for causing the earthquake so they would have an excuse to occupy Haiti. I then did a search and came up with several articles on the subject.

Are you sure this isn't from one of Reverend Jeremiah Wright's sermons? That's the last time I heard anything this far out there. Of course you realize that six percent of Americans believe the moon landing was faked (I guess out in the desert or in a studio). You can find a certain amount of kooks who will believe just about anything, and they will go to their grave swearing that Elvis is still alive (though admittedly older) and that the US government developed AIDS to destory African Americans.

This is not surprising, but it is amusing. The thought of a giant antenna-like earthquake generating laser in Alaska, with global range, somehow reminds me of Lost in Space and that corny robot: "Danger Will Robinson, Danger"

I think if we had the power to cause earthquakes this would be a very weak reason to use it, we could devistate our enemies with little military force.

Conspiracies are fun to read, but I read them the same way I read about Bat Boy.

This comes as no surprise for me. Why? Because when we had an earthquake in Middle Java back in the year 2004 or so, my professor, yes, someone with a Phd, one of the most respected psychologists in Indonesia told us that her imam told her that the American caused the earthquake by detonating something deep into the earth. She didn't say she believed, she just thought it was possible.

My respect for her was down for like.. well... I dunno how to describe to you what I felt back then. If someone who supposed to be so intelligent could so easily swayed to believe such a ridiculuous stuff just because an imam say that then my country is really really doomed.

Okay, run by me again the idea of how we can cause earthquakes… ? I think I never received the memo with the instructions. LOL. I guess as with everything that goes wrong in this world that is inexplicable, incomprehensible and causes severe devastation, we typically need somebody to blame for it. Many hundreds of years ago, people were blamed with being “hexed” or cursed if they showed abnormal behavior (signs of mental illness) or were assumed to be possessed by evil. Back then nobody could truly understand how slight abnormalities in brain function could be responsible for people convulsing due to seizure disorders, for example, and instead they were thought possessed by evil and locked away. The 1918 flu pandemic was blamed on various countries at first also. Remembered as the most severe flu in history (it killed approximately 80 – 100 million people worldwide in a mere year!), it started in the US during the final year of World War I and since the disease itself as well as the causes for it remained unknown for a while (the fact that it was a viral infection transmitted by close people contact), it was initially presumed to have been instigated through a terroristic, biological warfare attack with by the Germans. However, the truth was that the war itself provided ample opportunity for a global spread of the disease, since it brought together people from various locations that would have otherwise never had the chance of meeting and interacting. The fact remains that creating a scapegoat for certain occurrences helps people cope by providing a way of dealing with a bad situation for which little to no answers (let alone reasons) exist.

If this is true then America has proven She could conquer any territory by giving a natural-like disaster. It is not impossible. There are a lot of genius out there and they'll not stop experimenting in order to create a thing that could lead them to fame. I hope they'll realize that they're also humans whether they're black or white, they're also vulnerable. Anyway, thanks for that informative article shewolf!

Wow. I guess this proves that no good deed goes unpunished. Show up with food and medical supplies, and suddenly you're under suspicion. Frankly, if we wanted to invade Haiti for some reason, we could come up with a much simpler excuse (we had a much easier one for going into Iraq). Why would we cause a huge humanitarian crisis?

People are crazy....on the other hand, if there weren't crazy people throwing wacky theories around, the truth wouldn't be as interesting.
