what are your memories of the Atari 2600 game system?

For me, it was my first game system as a kid. Loved it and played the games I had any chance I could.

Yes, I even have Pac-man and E.T. the 2 worst games for the system which helped cause the video game crash.

Few years ago I finally got the bug to start video game collecting, and having all my old systems helped. I decided for one of my collections to get all of the Activision titles for the 2600. As you can see in the photo, I have a good amount of them: cart only and boxed.

What are your memories?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I remember asking my Mom for Pac Man for my birthday and being told it was too expensive and then asked my Dad for it as well, he bought it from me without a second thought.(Dad and Mom did not live together).

My mom took this opportunity to teach me a lesson and took the game from me and hid it. I was so upset and in the next few days. I was spoken to repeatedly about the lessons I should learn and would learn about this behind her back scheme and how it would effect my choices and decisions in the future.

I have no idea what those lessons were to this day.

I found where she hid the game, stole it back and continued to play it when she was not home. I never got caught and she never confronted me again on the subject so either she never knew I had stolen it or just did not want ask me about it.

I still to this day have no idea what I really should have learned from this but if anyone could help out please feel free to do so.

Hopefully, the fact that your mother never confronted you about taking it back once you found it, means she realized she was the one being childish and didn't want to make herself look more foolish by bringing it up!

I played pac-man and donkey kong so long my hands literally ached. We used to use padded ski gloves to soften the joystick.

Man, I miss those days... I remember when frogger was all the rage and centipede was like soooo cool graphics.

thanks for the trip down memory lane.

The system was also my first video game system I ever played. I had a lot of games for Atari 2600. I remember having ET, Pac-Man, Dig Dug, Spider-Man, Asteroids and many more. My family bought a majority of the games at garage sales for cheap. It was a pretty fun system, but the joystick wore out quickly! I remember having to buy several of them.
