What are your best tips for proofreading college essays?

Tip for best answer: M$0.37
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There are many different kinds of proofreading: proofreadig for grammar, typographical errors, punctuation, meaning, coherency, logic of argument, etc.

Many writiers have difficulty proofreading their own work because the eye/brain tends to overlook what it has written or it self-corrects. Therefore, it is best to proofread outloud either by reading aloud while alone or with a friend - while you readwith each of you holding a copy of the text. By reading aloud I mean not only reading the words outloud but also reading the punctuation outload. For example: "For example colon open parens (or open parnetheses)..." You get the idea. Remember, spell check is not your friend.
