What are tonsils?

Why do I need my tonsils removed? What do tonsils do? Why do we have tonsils if we don't need them? Is tonsillitis chronic? Is there any way to cure tonsillitis holistically? What is the typical age to have tonsils removed? How do I find a reputable doctor to remove tonsils? What is the recovery time from having tonsils removed? What are the symptoms of tonsillitis?

Tonsils part of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is part of your immune system, and runs throughout the body. Tonsils themselves are not completely useless; their purpose is protecting your body from infection by trapping the germs that might enter through your nose and mouth. Unfortunately, tonsils can get infected too and when this happens, they need to be removed.

The symptoms of tonsillitis include swollen lymph nodes and tonsils, problems swallowing, headaches and fever, stomach pain and bad breath. Tonsillitis is a common side effect of colds and illnesses. If this is the case, the tonsil infection will go away when you are no longer sick. To help relieve the effects faster, be sure to stay hydrated, gargle with salt water and take over-the-counter pain killers. If the symptoms don't abate or if you get tonsillitis often, it is likely that the tonsils will have to be removed. Recovery takes 10-20 days.

There is not necessarily a traditional age to have the tonsils removed. One good way to compare to doctors is to go to this website -- http://www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov -- which allows you to compare hospitals and the success rates of surgeries among other statistics.

Tonsils are accumulations of lymphoid tissue (a part of the human body's immune system that helps safeguard it from bacteria as well as other irrelevant entities), which line the mouth and opening of the throat.

Tonsils usually help to filter out bacteria, viruses as well as other unsafe substances to avert infection in respiratory system and the rest of the body.

And, tonsillitis that is extremely common, particularly in children, is a swelling of the tonsils generally triggered by bacterial or viral infection. Consequently, the cure of viral tonsillitis is by and large restricted to relieving the major symptoms. Though, antibiotic medicines are utilized in the healing of tonsillitis to lessen the infection caused by bacteria.

However, certain individuals who have repeated infections may require surgical treatment to get rid of the problem.
