What are the risks to the pancreas after bypass surgery?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I am sorry, I not sure if I understand your question, I am assuming you are referring to pancreas bypass surgery, which are done to help relieve the symptoms of pancreatic cancer, as opposed to heart bypass surgery or gastric bypass surgery. One of the potential complications would be a blocking of the bile duct. In case you were asking about heart or gastric bypass surgery, I have attached several links about those procedures and recovery.

Assuming you mean cardio-pulmonary bypass there is a less than 1/2% chance of developing pancreatitis after surgery. On a study of more than 10,000 patients only 39 (0.4%) developed pancreatitis. Those that developed post-operative pancreatitis did have longer hospitalization time and increased mortality.

According to the American Journal of Surgery Sept. 2005 volume 190 issue 3 the frequency of post cardiac surgery pancreatitis is diminishing but is still associated with significant mortality.
