1.The blockade is was use as a security measure.
2.The blockade was created as an anti-Hamas tactic.
3.The blockade was use as a means of freeing captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

According to the article the blockade hasn't accomplished these goals especially number 2 and 3. Although the main reason for the blockade is security it has fail to stop the flow of weapons into Gaza. Also the blockade took a turn for the worst due to the due to the incident between the Israelis commandos and a relief flotilla.
