There are several large lakes within the Western Hemisphere, but five of the eight largest lakes in the Western Hemisphere are the five Great Lakes. All of the largest lakes are part of North America. Here are the five largest lakes in the Western Hemisphere in order:
1. Lake Superior – 82,000 sq km – either the largest or second largest lake in the world depending on whom you ask. The only one larger is the Caspian Sea
2. Lake Huron – 60,000 sq km
3. Lake Michigan – 58,000 sq km
4. Great Bear Lake – 31,300 sq km – the first one on the list that isn’t part of the Great Lakes – it is in the Northwest Territories in Canada
5. Great Slave Lake – 28,500 sq km
The largest lake in South America is either Lake Maracaibo (13,200 sq km) or Lake Titicaca (8,300 sq km). Lake Maracaibo is considered a bay by many since it connects directly to the Gulf of Venezula.
