In the first round with the 27th pick, New England selected Devin McCourty, cornerback from Rutgers. McCourty 39 of the 52 games he played for Rutgers. He had 238 tackles, 14 of them for a loss of yardage, two quarterback pressures, two forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries. McCourtney also intercepted six others passes and knocked down 27.

In the second round the Patriots selected tight end Rob Gronkowski from Arizona. Gronkowski broke all the school records for tight ends for receptions, yards and touchdowns, despite playing in only 22 games. He had 75 receptions and 1,197 yards.
