#FollowFriday - Yea, same as the first, but a different hash (people don't realize this!)
#news
#nowplaying
#JustinBeiber - I almost say this one in complete jest, but it's true.
In regards to you tweeting at TealMyster (and why the wedding thing happened): People use Twitter as a search engine too. But there's a lot of bots on there as there are on any website. Things like SocialOomph (which can get you banned, which I don't condone it but it does exist) or Twibes OR Twellow can get you a lot of followers (and not get you banned).
The way Twitter works is becoming more and more apparent to me each day. It's all based on an algorithm of particular phrases and keywords that match you against someone who's looking for that particular phrase or keyword at that moment.
Having made it past 1,000 followers on Twitter, I can really only share with you what I did and what works "today". Twitter really is a moving target, but there are some basics and concrete items that you should be doing to gain followers:
1. Be consistent. Most of the highest ranked people either A: have a PR team or B: keep up with their current volume of tweeting. See http://www.twitterholic.com for statistics. You'll see that someone like the current president has had an increased number of tweets in the past as his campaign was growing adding +1 to +3 tweets a day and then adding +1 to +3 more to that account's normal volume of tweets.
2. Try not go go off topic. If you're marketing a particular service online, like we do for web design, it really doesn't interest your Twitter followers to read over and over about web design. They get bored with you, figure out that you are tweeting the same thing over and over and eventually unfollow you. Why? Not to speak ill of the dead, but weren't you annoyed at Billy Mays being on TV almost 8 months after he died selling the same product. Makes you want to change the channel. Case in point.
3. Don't over use hash tags. Just because you go put all of the current popular hash tags in your tweet at the same time does not mean that it's the same hash tags being presented to people in another time zone. Not as easily accessible nor does it make you as readily able to be found.
4. Tweet with quality. Tweeting "LOL" or "That was really awesome" with all of the vagueness attached isn't going to get you followers much less people re-tweeting that as a good tweet. I've read, and found this to be true, that tweeting a tweet with the word "you" in it, has the highest number of re-tweets. So, what does that mean Turk? Ok, easy. Tweet things that are conversational - "What did you ___ _____", "How did ______ make you _______", "Did you know that Twitter is doing paid advertising now on hash tags?". Be conversational and ask questions. THEN put one or two hash tags behind it. Your ultimate goal for twitter is to have as many people RT your tweets as possible so you do as little work as possible.
5. Use something like Tweetdeck to simplify your life. There's no reason to be on 5 different sites when they can all be on the same screen at the same time. You can monitor multiple Twitter accounts ( and tweet the same tweet from one console to multiple accounts ) using Tweetdeck.
6. Add your Twitter to as many self-updating places as possible. Example being that you can add your twitter feed to Mahalo on your user profile. Make all roads lead to Rome. The exact same thing works in the fundamentals of SEO and getting ranked highly by creating back links on search engines. Eventually when you get enough volume of tweets that are quality, places like Google start putting a feed under your most recent tweets. As an example, Google "TurkReno" and you'll see what I mean.
Hope this helps.
As an off-topic point for this entire question, it would be really nice if Mahalo put in their tweets a #mahalo hash for all of the shared and tweeted questions by default when it's being tweeted from Mahalo.com. More users == win! Right? Maybe. Different question for that =)

M$#FollowFriday is an automatically good tag however. But, use it on a Follow Friday and follow others yourself. Find people who have tweets that interst you. If you see something funny or interesting from someone you follow, re-tweet it to those who follow you that might not have seen it.
Another great way to get followers is to simply link accounts like Facebook and Twitter, or Mahalo here. Then, start following people. I myself am "Piaffedreams" on Twitter and have gotten a lot of followers simply by social networking. Admittedly, I'm also a Twilight fan and as I have followed other Twi-hards and Twi-cast members, I've gained a lot of followers by getting in on twitter events that revolve around that interest. However, the bulk of my followers are still other people interested in horses which is my primary topic of tweeting.
I do tweet my pages from Mahalo also and that gets some good hits to the pages.

M$1. Anything mentioning "real estate".
2. Anything mentioning "social media".
3. Anything mentioning "justin bieber" or "jonas".
4. Anything mentioning "make money".
5. Anything sexual or porny - although these followers generally get deleted by Twitter about as fast as they pop up.

Thanks for all the info! I myself am not necessarily looking to get a bunch of spam followers. After the message to @Tealmyster and the instant follower, I got really curious about it. Thanks again!
