what are the top 5 general online forums in US ?
Thanks.
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Top forums, I'll be happy to answer this! It somewhat depends who you ask and how you rank them, by posts or by members?
For example, 4chan is one of the busiest forums by posts, but not by members. In other words, their members are very active and post a lot. Some sites are not included, like Yahoo which has huge discussion forums, and Google which supports Usenet forums (they call it Google Groups).
After some internal debate, I settled on the following sort: Forums using all software, English, and sorted by posts during the last week. Since you asked for "general" forums, I removed ones that are topical in nature.
5. JLA Forums
6. Something Awful
8. Offtopic.com
And of course don't forget Facebook, which can be argued is the biggest "forum" of all, though it's hard to count posts in the traditional sense, since it is custom designed and more loosely organized. Myspace is also up there.
Combining this with the other sites mentioned, I would come up with a quantitative/qualitative ranking as follows:
A. Google Groups (includes Usenet)
B. Yahoo
C. JLA Forums
D. Something Awful
E. Offtopic.com
F. Facebook (most active, but not a traditional forum)
G. Myspace (less active than Facebook, but in the same mold)

FYI another top one would be AOL which has several message boards, under 'People Connection' and 'message boards'.
and if you're still puzzled by the ranking I compiled, although places like 4chan may have a 'General' section, in general they are not general in nature :-)
craigslist may be seen as one giant message board, but in reality the majority of listings are classifieds, so they almost all fall into the category of an 'ad' of one sort or another.
Hope This Helps
