What are the top 10 U.S. Banks ranked by the the number of retail customers (i.e. Bank of America, 1.4 million people)?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

1.4 million was just the number of retail customers BOA absorbed when it acquired LaSalle Bank Corporation from ABN AMRO.
I need time to find the figures you really need.

M$When looking at assets the Federal Reserve is the place to go because they keep things up to date, with all the recent bank mergers the listing you have here is off and even includes some banks that no longer exist.

Total Assets and/or Total Deposits is a much more common way to rank banks. The only way to get the total number of customers involves going to each banks website to see if they mention it on the site, otherwise you have to read through their yearly report.

M$Kareul, as a higher ranked member of Mahalo you should know that Wikipedia is not a reliable resource to pull that 1.4 million number from. That is why I pulled the 59 million consumer number from the Investor Fact Book released by BoA itself (see page 2) http://phx.corporate-ir.net/External.File?item=UGFyZW50SUQ9MzQ1NzV8Q2hpbGRJRD0tMXxUeXBlPTM=&t=1
abrydon, Wikipedia says Bank Of America has 1.4 million retail customers
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_of_America
Thanks, my BOA example of 1.4 million was a made up example, sorry for the confusion.
If you read that Wikipedia article, the 1.4 million is just the number of retail customers BOA absorbed when it acquired LaSalle Bank Corporation from ABN AMRO.
But HSBC is considered a US bank if the question is concerned with the top players in the retail banking industry in the US. Bloomberg and Business Week included them in their "Biggest (Remaining) U.S. Retail Banks" list.
This list looks to be the closest offered so far but I would be careful of your sources. In one of my other comments I pointed out that BoA has over 59 million customers, not 1.4 million... also Capital One has over 45 Million (not 5 million).
Another point to watch out for is the question is asking about U.S. banks but you included HSBC which is based in London.

I think there's a difference if you say "US retail banks" or if you say "American retail banks." The latter has the connotation of being all-American retail banks, the earlier can include foreign banks operating in the United States.
That's why Bloomberg and Business Week includes HSBC in their "Biggest (Remaining) U.S. Retail Banks" list.

Several of the banks on the list above no longer exist and/or have merged together.
