Kidney failure occurs when the organ is not able to filter urine and other waste products from the blood or when the kidney suffers direct damage. Failure may be either acute or chronic.

Acute kidney failure may result from injury to the kidneys, a bad reaction to certain medications or allergens, severe dehydration, kidney stones, obstructive bladder or kidney tumors and dangerous infections, such as sepsis. Chronic kidney failure results from diabetes, hypertension, bladder cancer, liver cirrhosis, polycystic kidney disease and lupus.

Dialysis helps in kidney failure because it removes the build up of toxins from the blood. The process involves using a machine that pumps toxic blood out of the body through a dialyzer. The dialyzer filters waste and pumps fresh, healthy blood back to the body.

Finding out everything you need to know about your kidneys would be to research and talk to your doctor. There is the National Kidney Foundation that talks about kidney disease at length.
Kidney disease may be caused by diabetes or uncontrolled high blood pressure and African Americans, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, Native Americans and seniors are population segments that are at increased risk. One of the first symptoms of kidney disease is extreme fatigu.
Left unchecked, kidney disease can lead to complications like high blood pressure, anemia (low blood count), weak bones, poor nutritional health and nerve damage.
For more information, the National Kidney Foundation's Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEPĀ®) offers free screening for those at risk - anyone 18 years and older with high blood pressure, diabetes or a family history of kidney disease.
