What are the symptoms of whooping cough (pertussis)? How many people in the United States have whooping cough each year? Worldwide?

I had whooping cough (aka the 100 day cough) about 18 months ago, and I must say it was absolutely the worse illness that I have ever had and it lasted about 4 months. I had been vaccinated as a child, but apparently the protection had worn off. How often should adults get a pertussis vaccination?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Early symptoms of whooping cough are usually mild:
1. runny nose
2. dry cough
3. fever.

After a few days the symptoms gets worse:
1.severe coughing in fits or episode that can last up to one minute in which the face usually becomes red or blue due to lack of oxygen.
2. vomiting after coughing episode
3. coughing up thick phlegm
4. fatigue

Complications of this can be severe and life threatening for infants like dehydration, pneumonia, seizures, brain damage, and respiratory arrest.

Note: There are about 7,994 cases of whooping cough in the U.S. every year.
And worldwide:

The most obvious symptom of Whooping Cough, Pertussis is a dry cough that sounds like a bark. Other symptoms are a runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, watery eyes and a fever. These may look like a cold at first and can also worsen. Adults should get vaccinated every 10 years.

Each year there are about 5000-7000 cases reported in the United States. Since the 1980s, incidents of pertussis have increased steadily. Worldwide, there are about 30–50 million cases of Pertussis per year.
