Mesothelioma does not have a connection to smokers. Mesothelioma is an incurable disease that's caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a mineral fiber that was commonly used as insulation and as a fire-retardant. As such, most older homes and building contain a significant amount of asbestos. And when asbestos materials are disturbed, microscopic fibers become airborne and inhaled. This exposure to asbestos is what causes mesothelioma. And it can take many years, even decades, before becoming symptomatic.

Symptoms of mesothelioma include:

*Shortness of breath
*Chest pains
*Abdominal pain and/or swelling
*Weight loss
*Decreased appetite
*Night sweats

Mesothelioma is diagnosed by a tissue biopsy. And since diagnosis is typically made too late, most people will die from the disease within one year of diagnosis.

Smoking alone does not cause mesothelioma, unless the cigarettes used asbestos filters. Working with asbestos is the single largest cause of mesothelioma. Shortness of breath and chest pain from an accumulation of fluid in the pleura are the main symptoms of mesothelioma. Here are the other symptoms of mesothelioma:

· Weight loss
· Swelling and pain in the abdomen
· Blood clotting abnormalities
· Bowel obstruction
· Anemia
· Fever

The symptoms of mesothelioma is subtle which makes it difficult to diagnose early. The symptoms are lower back pain or side chest pain and shortness of breath. A few numbers of people may experience difficulty swallowing or have persistent cough, fever, weight loss or fatigue. There is also muscle weakness, loss of sensory capability, coughing up blood, facial and arm swelling and hoarseness of voice.

No, smokers cannot get mesothelioma. It is mainly caused by asbestos exposure. The fibers of asbestos which are inhaled through the mouth and nose will become embedded in the lining of the lungs causing damage which results in lung cancer or asbestosis.

Mesothelioma is almost always caused by asbestos and takes several years to develop. The symptoms usually appear after more than 15 years after the infection. There are practically no early symptoms of mesothelioma, which is why the disease is commonly diagnosed at a late stage of development.

The symptoms include;

Persistent dry or raspy cough (typically non-productive, meaning there is little or no phlegm)
Coughing up blood (hemoptysis)
Difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia)
Night sweats or fever
Unexplained weight loss of 10 percent or more
Fatigue
Persistent pain in the chest or rib area, or painful breathing
Shortness of breath (dyspnea) that occurs even when at rest
The appearance of lumps under the skin on the chest
Unexplained weight loss
Swelling or pain in the abdomen
Anemia
Diarrhea or constipation (in general, any change in bowel habits or regularity)
Nausea or vomiting
Heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat

My uncle died of mesothelioma last year, so I did some research. There is no association between smoking and mesothelioma, it is almost always linked to (workplace) asbestos exposure. It can appear a long time after asbestos exposure; as late as 20-50 years.

As for signs and symptoms, Wikipedia has you covered:
" * Chest wall pain
* Pleural effusion, or fluid surrounding the lung
* Shortness of breath
* Fatigue or anemia
* Wheezing, hoarseness, or cough
* Blood in the sputum (fluid) coughed up (hemoptysis)"

Mesothelioma is most common among carpenters and builders.
