What are the symptoms of Bacterial Meningitis?

Bacterial Meningitis is so serious and has so many horrible complications, that it is a real health concern. However, I think it's rare enough that so many people, including myself, don't know the symptoms. Because early treatment is very important and I have a son in school, I want to know the warning signs to help protect him.

What are the symptoms that should cause alarm and could indicate bacterial meningitis?

Bacterial Meningitis is a very serious disease that affects between 3,000 to 5,000 people per year. It is fatal about 20%-25% of the time, even with aggressive medical treatment. Meningitis can be brought on by several things, including viruses, fungi, a bad reaction to medication, or toxins. Bacterial Meningitis, however, is the most serious of these conditions.

Bacterial Meningitis usually presents itself the same way in adults, although symptoms may take up to a week to develop. The most commonly experienced symptoms include a stiff neck, fever, headache, vomiting, and confusion. About one third of the time, the infected person will even have seizures. Some of the less common symptoms are localized weakness, usually in the face, joint pains, and a rash that may be mistaken for a bruise.

Symptoms in infants will be different. If your child in infected, you may notice a cry in a high pitch, trouble waking them up, a blank stare, vomiting, refusal of food, cold hands or feet, or a fever. If your infant shows these symptoms, seek medical help immediately, since Bacterial Meningitis can cause brain damage in a few hours, even death within 24 hours.

Fever, headache, and a stiff neck are the most common. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, confusion, and sleepiness. As it advances, bruises develop under the skin and spread quickly. Eventually, it can cause seizures.

The real risk with bacterial meningitis is that its initial symptoms can often be dismissed by its victims as being something not serious.

The symptoms of meningitis are similar to the symptoms for the flu. :( Apparently, many people mistake meningitis for the flu, and don't get concerned enough. The symptoms include fever, throwing up, headaches, being really sleepy, and lack of appetite.

What is different from the flu, though, is with meningitis the patient is often confused and his or her neck gets stiff. These are key differences. Also, there can be rashes or even seizures, with meningitis. Those are not common with the flu at all.
