Curling stone is a thick stone disc normally weighing between 38 and 44 pounds. A handle is attached to the top.
The highest quality curling stones are made from "ailsite" a specific type of granite. This type of granite is only found in one location in the world, Ailsa Craig. This is an island off the Ayrshire coast in Scotland. I have attached an image of the island below.
Quarrying has sopped effectively at Ailsa Craig, which has caused a spiralling in price for the curling stones. Top quality stones which are required for top class competition can cost $1,500 - $1,700.
The stones themselves are made by Kays of Scotland, see - http://www.kaysofscotland.co.uk/
This company has been making Ailsa Craig curling stones since 1851.
Kays are located at - 9 Barskimming Road, Mauchline, Ayrshire, Scotland, KA5 5AJ - Tel +44 (0) 1290 550256 and can be e-mailed at - info@kaysofscotland.co.uk
