According to the National Geographic page on deforestation, "The world’s rain forests could completely vanish in a hundred years at the current rate of deforestation." According to Mongabay.com, (picture chart below) In the Brazilian Amazon forest in 2009, there were about 10,000 sq.km less trees than there were in 1988. Interestingly, there were certain ups and downs in between. Apparently a big reason for deforestation in Brazil is to produce soybean plantations. (A shame we can't have shade grown soya which has saved some of the forests in coffee, tea and coco producing countries).
The second picture shows the levels in other tropical countries. Brazil and Indonesia are leading the stats in deforestation levels each year.
About the causes of deforestation, it doesn't sound like the problems are only or mainly connected to harvesting timber for paper. According to OneWorld, "The root cause of deforestation is the failure of the world’s market economy to award any value to this inventory of assets of the rainforest. This malfunction contrasts with the rocketing prices of timber, minerals, fossil fuels, meat, cosmetics and biofuels, each of which involves destruction of the forest. "
According to the Green Press Initiative "Each Year More than 20 million trees are consumed for production of book papers and about 95 million tress are consumed for newsprint".
hope that helps
