From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Depression

The Great Depression Began
"The Great Depression was a worldwide economic downturn starting in most places in 1929 and ending at different times in the 1930s or early 1940s for different countries. It was the largest and most important economic depression in modern history, and is used in the 21st century as an example of how far the world's economy can fall. The Great Depression originated in the United States; historians most often use as a starting date the stock market crash on October 29, 1929, known as Black Tuesday. The end of the depression in the U.S is associated with the onset of the war economy of World War II, beginning around 1939.[1]

The Great Depression ended
The turning point in the depression was in 1933, as can be seen in the above Industrial Production graph. Some economists attribute the subsequent recovery to monetary expansion that began after the bank holiday a few days after Roosevelt was inaugrated on March 4, 1933 and devaluation of the U.S. dollar that was then tied to gold.[27]"

Not a solid end date because it did not end at the same time for everyone. Some people were fortunate to get jobs building war ships and bombs, and others were still homeless.

Almost everyone says it started on Black Tuesday, October 29 1929. However, the end date of the great depression is very debatable, as is clear by all the dates given above.

I would say that the great depression ended around September 1939, when the government really started expanding national defense. Unlike this war, that created an economic boom by creating jobs and stimulating industrial growth. It definitely did not end as late as 1941. In fact by that time the economy was totally mobilized for supporting the war effort, and there were so many jobs that there was even a shortage of workers!!
