What are the signs or symptoms of Mono?

My sister's daughters best friend has come down with Mono, also known as Mononucleosis. I am a tad bit concerned because my sisters daughter spent the entire weekend here. What are the signs or symptoms of Mono? Hopefully we are all safe and will not get it, but I would like to be prepared, on my my toes and understand the signs or symptoms.

Some of the symptoms of mono are not that easily to recognize as some of them are similar to the symptoms of strep throat. A part list includes

1) Sore throat. So severe that can the child may describe as the worse sore throat he or she has ever had

2) Child may run a high fever

3) Enlarged lymph nodes in areas such as the neck, armpit or groin.

4) Child may complain of not feeling well and experience fatigue

5) Your child may also experience nausea, headaches and loss of appetitive

According to the website link below, some younger children may not experience any of the symptoms mentioned above when they have mono while older children and teens will more than like experience some of these symptoms.

Children usually get over the initial symptoms of mono within two to four weeks. However there are cases where it may take a couple of years for some children to fully recover from mono but scenarios are rare.

I had mono (kissing disease) when I was 19 years old. It is a viral infection that is passed through saliva, coughing or sneezing. It is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus which is a type of herpes. I don't even know how I contracted the infection. At the time I had it, I didn't know another sole that did.

The most notable symptom that I experienced was fatigue. I couldn't even stand for over 5 minutes without the feeling of passing out. It can also act very much like Rheumatic Fever or Strep Throat as well. It seems to affect teens and young adults the most. When children have it, many times it remains unnoticed.

Here are some of the symptoms that many people experience with mononucleosis according to the MayoClinic
-quote-
* Fatigue
* Weakness
* Sore throat, perhaps a strep throat that doesn't get better with antibiotics
* Fever
* Swollen lymph nodes in your neck and armpits
* Swollen tonsils
* Headache
* Skin rash
* Loss of appetite
* Soft, swollen spleen
* Night sweats
--end quote--

I actually developed jaundice and hepatitis that is associated with mono. My eyes and skin yellowed. When ever I peed, it was a horrible brown color. Not everyone experiences this side effect.

Mono is usually not serious and people should really rest as much as possible when they have it. It is a key to a healthy recovery. It usually lasts four to eight weeks, with it being most noticeable for a couple of weeks. Most commonly, people only get this once in their lifetime.

However, sometimes it can become very serious, last months. My mother had it for 6 months and nearly died. She has bipolar and mono can, in extreme cases work on the nervous system. Some of her doctors believe that it made her bipolar worst.

People with mono should be monitored by a physician. There are complications that he/she will be aware about. Like the spleen can actually rupture and there can be some complications with the liver as well.

I had it in high school. The two primary symptoms I had initially were a very sore throat with swollen tonsils (initially diagnosed as tonsilitis) and complete exhaustion and inability to stay away for more than 15 min together with snoring while sleeping (due to the swollen tonsils). It took me 3 week off from school to recover and I was still very tired afterwards and got sick with every illness known to man for 3 years afterwards. My friend was sick for 8 weeks with mono and had more recovery issues because she tried to do more than she should.

If your daughter develops these symptoms - take her to a doctor and tell him/her that she had contact with someone with mono. I still have especially large tonsils from my tangle with mono 18 years ago.

The less obvious symptoms/complications can include impairment in liver and spleen function. Mono is found via a blood test for the antibodies.

The signs and symptoms of mononucleosis are quite specific but in cases where young children are affected it can look like a cold and doctors often do not make a diagnosis right away because the symptoms are similar to a viral infection. Through specific blood test, this condition will be diagnosed.

The typical symptoms are:
*fever that can last up a week or two
*experiencing a very sore throat
*enlarged glands in the neck area
*rashes all over the body
*swelling in the surrounding areas of the eyes.
*the child is often tired and has large and whitish tonsils
*and about 50% has an enlargement of spleen

The symptoms of mono usually lasts for two to three weeks and the fatigue stays for up to two months.
