What are the signs of an under active thyroid?

An under active thyroid, also known as Hypothyroidism, can cause people a lot of problems. I know that it can cause some people to become overweight, but that is about all I know of this problem. I have known several people who say they have an under active thyroid. To be honest, I don't know if they actually do or are blaming their weight on a condition to not feel so bad about it.

There are actually several different types of hypothyroidism, but most of them have the same types of symptoms, and all of them involve swelling of the thyroid gland itself. In some cases, hypothyroidism can be temporary, usually following pregnancy or during recovery from a severe virus or respiratory infection. However, an underactive thyroid is usually treated very easily with prescription medication which offers thyroid hormone replacement, and although it is a serious condition, it is probably not as common as we would like to believe.

Swelling of the thyroid causes the thyroid to not produce as much thyroid hormones, which aid in metabolism and other physiological functions. Silent thyroiditis typically develops early in life and involves alternating between states of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. The causes of this kind of hypothyroidism is believed to be congenital defects or problems at birth. Subacute thyroiditis is considered to be a very rare condition that affects some people recovering from severe viral infections. In this type of hypothyroidism, pain can be felt in the neck, and may radiate to other areas of the body. Although this condition can last for months, the thyroid gland usually returns to normal.

Hashimotos Disease is the most common form of hypothyroidism, and it affects primarily women in the adult years. The causes of Hashimoto's are believed to be autoimmune, in that the immune system begins attacking the thyroid gland. People who have had type 1 diabetes or who have adrenal insufficiency are much more likely to develop Hashimoto's disease.

The symptoms of all types of hypothyroidism are:
