What are the side effects of statins?
I have to take medication now for high cholesterol and was told that statins have side effects. Is that serious? Are there medications for high cholesterol without statins?

Hi!
These are the side effects of statins:
1. Muscle pain and damage which may be felt as pain, soreness, tiredness or weakness in muscle. The pain is often felt as mild discomfort.
2. Occasionally, statin can cause liver to increase production of enzymes that help digest food, drinks and medicines. If the increase is only mild, then it is safe to continue to take the drug but if it is severe you may have to stop using the drug altogether.
3. Some may develop nausea, gas, diarrhea or constipation.
4. Rash or flushing.
Some cholesterol-lowering drugs without statins is the bile acid sequestrants like colesevelam, cholestyramine and colestipol and nicotinic acid. These can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease based on clinical trials. Other available drugs are gemfibrozil, fenofibrate and clofibrate are acide derivatives are use for lowering high glyceride levels.
Don't forget that these are prescribed medicines so it would be best to consult your doctor so that he can thoroughly evaluate and prescribe the best medicine for you.
