What are the side effects of milk in cats?

I have always thought that milk was the best drink to give a cat. But when my friend left her cat in my care, she told me not to give the cat any liquid that is not water, not even milk; I was surprised. She later said that the veterinarian told her that milk is bad for adult cats. How true is that? What effects does milk have on cats?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Many cats are lactose-intolerant, which means that the lactose in milk and milk products produces stomach upset. It may have that some cats, like some humans, have lactose intolerant. Others cats are not. If your friend cat can not tolerate a bit of milk and suffering from indigestion or loose motion or diarrhea (adverse effects), please do not allow a little milk to the cat. If the milk makes the cat , then you should avoid it.
Some cats have medical concerns (like as your friend cat) that necessarily will exclude milk from their diet. But for healthy cats with no medical issues, small amounts of milk will not cause much harm but help the cat – as cats are fond of milk.

Many cats are lactose-intolerant, which means that the lactose in milk and milk products produces stomach upset, cramps, and gassiness. If your cat loves milk, and begs for it, a small amount of cream may be okay, two or three times a week. (The more fat in the milk, the less lactose.) Another compromise is CatSip, a product made from skim milk with an enzyme added that helps the digestion of lactose. Catsip is available in supermarkets such as Safeway, Albertson's and A&P, as well as pet products chains, such as PetSmart and Petco.
