What are the side effects of feline spay?
My aunt has a three year old cat who had had over sixteen kittens in her life time. The bad part is that all the kittens live in the same house with them. My cousin just adopted two of the kittens from her mom; a male and a female. They are about six month old now and she is planning to take the female kitten for spaying. She said she doesn’t want more kittens, but is also afraid of harming her pet. Is there any side effect of spay surgery on cats?

Spaying is extremely safe for cats, and can have many desirable side effects as well. The benefits of spaying are as follows:
1. Safe sterilization
2. Decrease in the anxiety level of your pet. Unspayed female cats often become anxious and frustrated during their estrus, or heat, because they cannot mate.
3. Cats who have been spayed have a 40%-60% less chance of getting mammary cancer.
4. Spaying decreases the incidence of reproductive tract infections
5. More stable behavior
There are few negative effects of spaying your cat, such as:
1. The cat will be permanently sterilized. For someone who has enjoyed having kittens in the house, this can be a negative.
2. Although spaying is extremely common practice among veterinarians, there are risks with any surgical procedure.
3. Spaying may cause an adult cat to gain a small amount of weight. This can be controlled through diet.
