What are the side effects (if any) of Gardasil?

I am very interested with having this vaccine for myself and my teenage daughter to prevent HPV and cervical cancer. But I just wanted to know what are the side effects of this vaccine? Is it really a safe and effective vaccine against HPV.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

According to the Gardasil patient information site, which is linked below, the most common side effects are Pain, itching, swelling, redness, at the injection site. Headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and fainting.
You can download the entire patient brochure at the last link. This will tell you everything you need to know, including the phone numbers of the FDAs consumer reaction hotline, to report an adverse reaction.
Some reactions that you may develop, they may not know about or are in the very rare category.

On a side note in early september Gradasil was approved for boys as well for HPV protection!

The Australian Government's Department of Health web site contains some information relating to Gardasil. The Department of Health's Therapeutic Goods Administration includes a breakdown of side effects based on cases reported in Australia:

"As of 17 June 2010, a total of 1,534 suspected adverse reactions have been reported in Australia following vaccination with Gardasil. The great majority have been mild and common problems such as soreness, swelling, or redness at the injection site. Most of the adverse reactions that have been reported are well recognised and listed in the Gardasil Product Information. Common adverse events reported to date are listed below:
Suspected adverse reaction Number of reports (% of total reports for Gardasil)
Injection site reaction 294 (19.1%)
Headache 316 (20.5%)
Dizziness 214 (13.9%)
Nausea 237 (15.4%)
Fatigue and lethargy 152 (10%)
Fever 148 (9.6%)
Fainting 134 (8.7%)
General feeling of being unwell 123 (8.0%)
Vomiting 123 (8.0%)"
