The most important function of the lungs is to take in air for breathing. However, that is not the lungs only function. The lungs also aid other organs of the respiratory system. The lungs help with regulating body temperature. These organs also provide needed moisture during respiration.
The lungs have another important secondary function. They protect the body from harmful substances. Cilia, phlegm and macrobes aid the lungs to get rid of germs and dirt. Cilia are small hairlike structures along the walls of the lungs that grab foreign particles. Phlegm captures dirt and germs that are expelled into the lungs and either is expelled out of the body or swallowed. Macrobes literally eat the invading substances to protect the body. Since this function protects the body from illness and disease it is a very important secondary function.
