What are the rules here regarding copied questions?

http://www.mahalo.com/answers/baseball/should-fighting-like-the-youkilis-fight-video-youkilis-fight-yesterday-be-allowed-in-baseball

http://www.mahalo.com/answers/volleyball/should-fighting-like-the-youkilis-fight-yesterday-be-allowed-in-womens-beach-vollyball

The second question was posted just few minutes after the first, with one word changed. The second user hasn't even changed all of the "baseball"s to "volleyball", clearly showing that he/she has copied and pasted the original question.

What should be done here?
Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I am not sure what is up with that, clearly plagiarized. This is uncommon, in fact this is the first time I have seen a case like this, I will send a message to @albanian and find out what is up.

Thankyou Jeff, I thought the world had gone mad!

I didn't mention names in my question which may be why other answerers here have misunderstood. I wasn't sure if we were allowed to mention other users' names in this sense, like talking about them. Better safe than sorry.

Since it is two different sports I am leaving it up. The first question might have sparked an interest in the second questions asker.

I don't understand how a user is allowed to plagiarise someone else's question, only changing ONE WORD.

The user who copied the original question hasn't even managed to change the whole thing to make it his own.

So, does this mean that if I like the look of a question posted by another user, I can copy it, paste it into my own question and change one word?

If so then there's something seriously wrong.

It looks like they removed the question because of @lilyloretta (whom I now discover is from England and likely has no idea about either question or baseball or ice hockey). Anyway, the resemblance was completely intentional and the reader was supposed to notice it. If you think about it you will see what I was doing by changing the second sport to women's beach volleyball. Perhaps might need to google images for women's beach volleyball but probably not.

You know, I didn't even notice it had been copied like that. I saw the two sports and that was it. You are right, I don't think this should be allowed either.

The issue here might have been that the user got some sort of error when trying to post his question, and thus re-submitted (after making some edits) before knowing that his initial post did indeed come through. I have done that myself when answering questions. Unfortunately, Mahalo can still be a little buggy.

As for copying and pasting questions, I don't think it should be, or is, condoned. Duplicate questions mean duplicate answers and tips being paid out that shouldn't be. I would expect that a Mahalo staff member would delete one of the versions of the question once duplicates are seen.

The only error was that I'm sure I changed the sport in each place but not all my edits make it through on Mahalo. The question was intended to be exactly the same but with the second sport changed. It was supposed to be read alongside the first question. If anyone should have complained it should have been @angieh, but she started it with the swipe at baseball.

Did you actually look at the links I've provided?

The questions were posted by different users, not the same person.

As you can see from @lesliec 's answer below it clearly is condoned, although I have absolutely no idea why. I'm not going to let this go as it's cheating, it's plagiarism and I thought this site was against those things.

Apparently the original asker @angieh did not see my version. So I'm still wondering what she would make of it. I will only say at the moment that the resemblance is absolutely intentional and the reader was supposed to notice it. Of course, they were also supposed to figure out why. Possibly the people complaining know nothing of all three sports involved.

No, evidently you don't.

However, in your defense, I have discovered that there might be a difference between British and American usage. I'm not sure because it's a legal thing and the legal references are by paid subscription which I wouldn't want to pay.

At any rate, it does make a difference whether or not you are familiar with the sports because it is vital in understanding both submitted questions and the relationship between them.

If I know nothing of the three sports involved, that desn't make any difference.

I know what PLAGIARISM is.

I did see your version, but I really have no comment. The question was not intended to be a "swipe at baseball" by any means. The question was a humorous take on the news story involving the fight that occurred.

I appreciate that @jeffhoard dealt with the situation. Anyone can answer the question, so if you had an opinion on my question, submitting an answer would have been the best way to express that.

That was the way I saw it - if I had posted a question that someone had a negative opinion of and they wanted to make that clear, they should do so to me, not via a question of their own posted specifically to take the mick.
