What are the risks of linking your online moniker with your real name? What are the payoffs?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I like this question. I think the risks include being harassed or stalked if someone looks up your name or number on whitepages.

That being said, I have my real name and cell phone number all over the net and I've never had a problem. If you are famous then the risks are reduced because you are probably already being harassed by the media.

I think one of the advantages at least today and in the future is that employers often look you up online and assuming you don't embarrass yourself online it provides another way for them to learn more about you.

A quick follow-up: how likely is it that employers will find out a user name and look that up as well? How deep will they look?

PS: this makes me sound like I have something to hide, but I'm really just curious about how easily things can be misinterpreted on the internet.

I don't think they will do it so much in the hiring stage, but possibly afterwards just to get a better feeling for what type of person you are.

I think I remember reading some news articles about employers checking this stuff online and I know that I would be searching if I was in a hiring position.

The best part is that you can always remember what your username is
no matter how many websites you register at

I've found that someone can (and someone likely will) trace you through chains of alias email addresses (even though you may give bogus "names" for each one) back to the base email for which you may have given your "real" name. Thus there may be no real internet "privacy". Once yer online, yer online for keeps. (Old hippy saying, don't post anything online you wouldn't be willing to place on a public billboard.) So there.

Pros: You're findable. Which could be great if you really need to be found because of your work, long distance family, etc.

Cons: You're findable. It could potentially be incredibly dangerous to have all of your information in one spot, or in several spots but under the same name. You could have stalkers, spammers, etc.

You just have to use your head when deciding what information you want posted online and under what alias, if any, to link that info to.

The main risk is that you write something embarrassing that someone you don't want to read (e.g. a prospective employer) can see. How much research employers do varies by employer, but it is not unusual for them to at least google your name.

If you have a common name (e.g. John Smith), they will have a much more difficult time linking you with an online comment.
