I'm not a mother, i have not the slightest idea.
I however am a father to 5 young children, and one on the way!
So i can give you some qualities that have helped my children grow in a positive way.
Just being there (like right now i should be there but im answering your question!) is important.
Being as calmly assertive as possible at all times, (even when one of their relatives die) is also important. You can do everything you can and it still wont affect how they grow up.
But what you can do is lead by example at an early age and maybe they will retain that knowledge.
Maybe they wont. =/

Apparently you feel that people who let their babies "cry it out" are bad parents.Are you a parent yet?
When you become a parent if you are not yet,Then you can feel that way.
I am told I am a wonderful mother.I have 3 children who are beautiful,smart and good natured.They have me home as a stay at home mom,ALL THE TIME! I nurture them,Kiss their booboos,hold them when they cry.Just because my husband and I chose to let our 2 out of 3 kids cry it out does not make us bad parents.They need to learn how to self soothe,This method allows that to happen.No I did not do it when they were 2 months old.They were both around the 14 month old mark.
Please don't pass judgement on people unless you have experience yourself!

Actually, I am not a parent. I know I made a judgement here in this question, but personally I wouldn't want to judge you or anyone else. I phrased the question this way because I thought it would possibly get more responses. Perhaps the wrong strategy. One of my favorite quotes is by Krishnamurti:
"Observation without judgement is the highest form of intelligence"
And now I see I have even made a judgement here by using the word 'wrong'

Please let me know what you are driving at, while I appreciate the questions my time is valuable.
"Just being there" definitely would affect the outcome, as to how well adjusted your children would grow up to be. I thought of another question:
