What are the origins of sign language?

When was ASL developed? How was ASL developed?
Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The history of Sign Language that is more universally used originated in Europe.

The first documented usage of a form of sign language was in the 17th century when a book by Juan Pablo Bonet was published that illustrated physical sign and gestures that could be used by the deaf community as a way to communicate.

In the 1750 French priest by the name of Abbe Charles Michel de L'Epee created the first school for the deaf. L’Epee took it upon himself to learn the hand gestures that were used in Bonet’s book (which were being us by some of his students who had been using these signs at home). L’Epee started to evolve the signs to help his students learn the French language. Before long this form of Sign Language was starting to be taught throughout Europe.

In 1815 an American Minister by the name of Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet traveled to Europe at the request of a good friend who had a deaf daughter. While in Europe Gallaudet learned these techniques of Sign Language, which would eventually evolve into what is now known as American Sign Language.
