Many people claim that the East Coast of Florida has the best beaches and sand, but I personally don't agree. The sand on the East coast is soft and white (that is true), but it is too fine and it sticks to you. Also the water is not nearly as clear and blue as it is in Ft Lauderdale.
Ft Lauderdale is the Yachting Capital of the World and often referred to as the Venice of America (but much, much cleaner).
In Fort Lauderdale, there are not a lot of waves (which I prefer) and you can see your toes when you are in the water and the beach (sand) is perfect, soft but not too much so.
There are over 4000 restaurants and 120 nightclubs. So, there is something for everyone. If you stay on the beach, and don't want to leave - there is plenty to do (shopping, dining and laid back nightlife). Be sure to check out the Elbo Room - the world famous beach front bar that was in the 1960 movie "Where the Boys Are".
If you want more of a night life you can go downtown to Las Olas. Public transportation is plentiful. You can take a relatively inexpensive cab from the beach to Las Olas or take the Water Taxi - Ride it all day for $5)
If you go on the water taxi during the day, you can take a tour of the mansions (millionaire's row) and see homes of the super successful from the Intracoastal Waterway.
It really is, in my opinion, the most beautiful place in America!!!

M$Clearwater beach is nice and a little more touristy, more nightlife.
Any of the beaches along the Road to Hana in Maui are amazing, especially the black sand beaches.
The beaches and islands in the Outer Banks are fantastic too, you can see wild horses on some of the islands and along the shore.
Good luck and Have Fun

M$Great question.
The Outer Banks of North Carolina is the perfect beach vacation...a great combination of peaceful relaxation and fun local activities/attractions; gorgeous beaches, a wide variety of water sports, world-class fishing and surfing, great local art and shopping, delicious local food, history, nature, etc.
