Having been in Copenhagen many times I have some thoughts. If you go to see the little mermaid, prepare to be underwhelmed. This is not to say that you should not see it, but it is not at all impressive.
The canal tours are highly recommended, provided you are visiting in warm weather (Summer was on a Thursday last year I believe).
Nyhaven is a beautiful place, not on these lists (surprisingly). Yes, it is primarily a restaurant area, but it is really something to see.

While you're in Denmark, you should take the time for a coastal castle tour. It is really worth the time (a full day)

M$1. The Little Mermaid
Hans Christian Andersen wrote a fairy tale about her, Disney produced the movie, and Copenhagen maintains a statue in her honour. The Little Mermaid continues to be the most popular tourist attraction in Denmark and one of the most photographed statues in the world.
Based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale
In 1909 the founder of Carlsberg, Brewer Carl Jacobsen attended Hans Beck's and Fini Henriques' ballet 'The Little Mermaid' based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale by the same name.
Deeply impressed by this performance the brewer asked sculptor Edvard Eriksen (1876-1958) to create a sculpture. The bronze statue was unveiled at Langelinie on 23 August 1913 as a donation from Brewer Jacobsen to the City of Copenhagen.

2. Amalienborg Palace
Amalienborg Palace, the royal couple's winter residence, is a major architectural work and probably the most outstanding piece of Rococo architecture in Denmark.
Amalienborg comprises four palaces and was originally conceived as town mansions for families of the nobility at the beginning of the 1750's. In 1794, after the fire at Christiansborg Castle, the mansions came into the possession of the Royal Family. At Amalienborg Palace the Royal Guard is on duty for 24 hours. The relief takes place every day at 12 o'clock noon.

3. The National Gallery
Statens Museum for Kunst, the Danish national gallery, is the only place in Denmark which features 700 years of Western art and cultural history under one roof. The museum houses a large collection of Danish and international paintings, sculptures, drawings, and installations. The museum is located in central Copenhagen near the Nørreport and Østerport stations, a short walk from the Castle of Rosenborg and the Botanical Gardens.

5. Kronborg Castle
Kronborg Castle is situated on the sea in Elsinore (Helsingør) and in clear weather you can get a clear view of Sweden across the sound.
The Castle was built between 1574- 85 during the reign of King Frederik II to keep and eye on and collect taxes from ships sailing through the narrow sound between Denmark and Sweden. This so-called Øresund-tax was for a long period an important income for Denmark.
The Castle burned down in 1629 but was rebuilt again in 1638. Kronborg contains the 62m-long Knight's Hall - one of the longest halls in Europe - and the famous statue of Holger Danske. Legend says that if Denmark is ever threatened, the stone figure will turn into flesh and blood and rise in defence of the kingdom.

7. The National Museum
Museum for all of Denmark
The National Museum is Denmark's largest museum of cultural history. The museum's main domicile is a classical 18th century mansion just a stone's throw from 'Strøget' at the center of Copenhagen. The National Museum is the museum for all Denmark, where you can follow the history of the Danes right down to the present day. And you can get around the world from Greenland to South America.
Guides, Sight and Sound

The National Museum's audio guide in both English and Danish is a transportable CD player with headphones. The museum also has equipment to magnify both exhibits and texts for the partially sighted.

8. Strøget
Copenhagen's largest shopping area is centred on Europe's longest pedestrian shopping street, Strøget, and the streets that surround it. Strøget is Denmark's premier shopping street. International titans like Prada, Max Mara, Louis Vuitton, Cerutti, Mulberry, Chanel, Marlboro, Karen Millen, Hermès and Boss are represented at the Kgs. 9. Round Tower
The Round Tower was built on the initiative of King Christian IV (1588-1648). The tower was the first stage of the Trinitatis complex, which was to gather three important facilities for the scholars of the seventeenth century: an astronomical observatory, a student's church and a university library. The tower was completed in 1642.
The Tower is built in the old Latin Quarter and right in the heart of Copenhagen.
The Round Tower is built together with Trinitatis church, which was inaugurated in 1656. In 1728 the church was damaged by a fire and was rebuilt again in 1731. The loft was used as a library for the University.
A 209-metre-long winding passage leads to the platform and the Observatory at the top of the tower from here you have a magnificent view over the old town, house roofs and church towers.

10. Viking Ship Museum
The Viking Ship Museum is located at the foot of Roskilde Fjord beside the Roskilde harbour, approximately 30 kilometres from Copenhagen. In 1962, five Viking ships were rescued and resurrected from the harbour.
The Museum was built to house and reconstruct these vessels. All five ships are vastly different. They were built for different purposes, different waters and by different Viking builders - and they all highlight the scope of Viking shipbuilding.
The museum has outgrown its initial role, and there are now other Nordic boats housed here. There is an artificial island next to the museum which houses archaeological workshops and educational institutions.
