Two of the most prestigious band competition in the U.S. are:
1.The Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival. This is an annual high school jazz festival and competition that takes place during the month of May at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.
The aim of this festival is to encourage young musician to play music by Duke Ellington and other various jazz artists. All the events of the festival are housed at JALC's Frederick P. Rose Hall. It is directed by Wynton Marsalis who is a renowned jazz trumpeter and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center.
2. The Charles Mingus High School Competition and Festival is the 3rd Annual competition that will take place on February 18, 2011. Sue Mingus and Justin DiCioccio are the producers. It will be bringing this year's some of the country's most talented young jazz musicians to New York City. There will be twelve schools that will be represented that are from California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey and New York.
