What are the most effective anti-malarial drugs?

How long does anti-malarial therapy usually take? Are there herbal alternatives to fight malaria?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

According to the Center for Disease Control, Malaria is treated differently depending on a few factors. Those factors are exactly which species of parasite caused the infection that led to malaria, if the organism is or is not resistant to specific antimalarial drugs, weight, whether the person who has malaria is or is not pregnant and age. The type of treatment used to treat malaria will depend greatly on the answers to the above questions. Age, weight and pregnancy could potentially limit the options available for treatment of malaria.

Choloroquine, atovaqaquone-prounail, artemether-lumefantrine, mefloquine, quinine, quinidine, doxycycline, clinadamycin and artesunate are all used to treat malaria.

It should be noted that doxycycline and clindamycin are used in conjunction with quinine and that the last drug listed, artesunate, is not licensed for use in the U.S, but it is available through the CDC malaria hotline.

Lime and lemon is used to treat fever associated with malaria.

Chirayata or Swertia Chirata is also used to treat fever associated with malaria. This herb helps lower high temperatures.

Alum that has been reduced to a powder form is said to help malaria attacks.

Holy basil is thought to be helpful in preventing the contraction of malaria when taken in the cold stage of the malarial fever.
