What are the most common ways to treat anxiety?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Sometimes a person can treat Anxiety by just making some life style changes. For example if it’s your job that is causing you anxiety maybe its time to consider making a career change. However, if the Anxiety is getting out of control to the point where its starting to effect your over all physical health and well being then it might be time to seek out professional help for it. The first thing to do would be to consult with a doctor to make sure there isn’t anything physically wrong that could be contributing to the issue. If they find nothing they can then refer the person to a mental health professional who can take over the treatment from there.

The mental health professional, such as a Psychiatrist will then decide on the course of treatment that should be used to help treat the Anxiety. There are two possible treatments that can be used for this purpose.

Cognitive-behavior Therapy: will focus on thought patterns of the patient, and try to determine what the triggers for the Anxiety Attacks are and try to combat them.

Exposure Therapy: Basically what its called, in this therapy the patient will face their fears head on in reality or in their imagination as a way to conquer the fear.

Along with these treatments the following medications can be used to also help the patient cope with the Anxiety benzodiazepines and antidepressants. The therapy sessions and treatment usually last up to 5 months.
