There are two good ways to prevent slipping on ice. The best way is to wear shoes that have grips, treads or cleats on the bottom. These grip the ice and prevent you from slipping. If your shoes are smooth on the bottom, you can buy sandpaper, cut it to size, and super glue it to the bottoms of your shoes to give yourself a better grip.

If you can’t wear shoes that have rough soles, your best defense against slipping is to take slow, short, choppy steps. If you try to go fast, you will build up too much momentum and can easily slip. If you try to glide, you can quickly lose control and end up gliding too far and/or too fast.

If you feel yourself slip on ice, the worst thing you can do is try to break your fall with an outstretched arm or leg (unless you think you will hit your head if you don’t.) Not only will you hurt your butt, you will have an injured limb as well.

Some of the most common injuries from slipping on ice involve your buttocks (since that’s where most people land) and include (but are not limited to):

A bruised, sprained, strained or broken tail bone

Bruising or swelling of the buttocks

Contusion of the buttocks

Most of the above injuries can be treated by resting the affected area, taking an Over The Counter pain reliever and RICEing the affected area if you have sprained or strained it. If the injured area is deformed, in severe pain, or doesn’t improve in 24 hours, see a doctor.
