What are the most comfortable headphones for 8+ hours of use?

I commute to work and sit in a cubicle all day long so I need some new headphones that I can wear all day long with minimal physical discomfort. My current headphones are the Sony MDR-7502 which squeeze my ears and cause them to ache after several hours. Comfort trumps sound quality for me but only by a little bit. I do like how the MDR-7502's sound when listening to audio podcasts, ambient alternative rock, and hip hop. Any suggestions?
Tip for best answer: M$2.00

This is more a matter of individual comfort but for my money the Bose Quietcomfort 3 "On Ear" acoustic noise cancelling phones are extremely comfortable. I've used them several times on flights from the east coast
to Hawaii which is about 11 hours in the air.

This is an amazon search for comfortable headphone. Click on the ones you likes and read the reviews. If many people say they are comfortable then they probably are. That may be better than relying on one persons opinion.

I suggest any ear buds that do not go in your ears, such as there:

These have little 'suction' pads, and could give you an earache after a while.
I listen to music a lot, for long period of time, and use the I pod ear buds.

Sometimes they can irritate me though, they can be painfully if you jam them in your ear canal, and they fall out a lot, depending on the shape of your ear.
Overall, I suggest you use actual headphones. My favorite are Panasonic noise canceling headphones. They are a little pricey, but they are worth it, they are comfortable, because they have a padding, they don't fall off, and of course the noise canceling system is the best in my opinion.

I find that ear buds begin to hurt my ears after a while. It almost feels like they are stretching the inside of my ears and they get sore.

Happened once in the first three hours of a 10 hour flight for me. I found the airlines over-the-ear headphones to be more comfortable over long periods of time.

Sony makes great affordable over-the-ear headphones with noise canceling features that make a huge difference.

Yes, I recommend going with ear bud style headphones as opposed to the over the ear style. The ones that go over the ear are going to be uncomfortable after a while no matter how much cushioning they have.

The ear bud style headphones basically just sit in your ear. They don't squeeze your head, so you don't really feel them.

You might think that the sound quality is not as good, but you would be surprised, how good the quality can be in ear buds these days.

Personally I use the ear buds that came with my ipod. I just plug them into my computer. I also have a couple pairs of over the ear headphones, but like you mentioned, they are not comfortable after long periods of wear. That's why I always use the ear buds.

Well, the best for comfort, I think, are the in-the-ear type of earbuds. They don't create any pressing on the ear at all, other than a slight pressure inside to stay in. For the first week or so they will be weird, as you aren't used to to them, but as you do get used to them, it's like wearing earplugs and at times, you might even forget you had them in.

My current pair are Genius brand, but I have used Koss, and some $40 sony buds. My favorite of all are the Sony ones, because they had superior quality and good manufacturing, but the problem was that they were not as robust as other ones and were the quickest to break (like 4 months or so). The Genius brand can be found for like $20-25 USD and sound ok.

Also, if you don't like those, I had a radioshack brand of over the ear headphones that weren't bad. They had sound adjustments on both sides of the headphones so you could adjust left and or right to make it perfect. I think they're like $40, but the problem is that due to a design flaw, they headphone part can break off if you aren't careful. It's easily fixable with super glue, but still...

I agree. All I can wear is in-ear. I have small ears and the buds hurt so much after a while. I have some Sony in-ear headphones. They are not bad at all. And comfortable.

I have found earbuds do not fit my ears well, without adding a moulded ear cover like you find with the Jabra line of earphone/microphones or professional quality in-ear monitor systems.

I personally like the Sennheiser line of headphones - they are very lightweight, comfortable, and sound quality is superb.

tip ArchSteve for this answer.
