What are the minimum requirements for becoming a substitute teacher in California?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

1. A 4-year college degree in any subject area and an official transcript.
2. To take the California Basic Educational Skills (CBEST) test. There are many sites that offer the test all over the state. This test covers basic skills in math, reading comprehension and writing. http://www.cbest.nesinc.com/
3. To be fingerprinted and have a background check from the Department of Justice. This generally costs around $50. Some school districts may reimburse for this fee after you've subbed, so save your receipt.
4. TB immunization test.
If you meet these requirements, you may apply for an Emergency 30-Day Substitute Permit. The substitute permit is valid for a period of one year and allows you to substitute teach on a day-to-day basis for up to 30 days in the same classroom. Please check with each individual school district for employment opportunities and requirements.
