What are the minimum requirements for becoming a substitute teacher in California?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

To substitute teach in California, you need:

1. A 4-year college degree in any subject area and an official transcript.
2. To take the California Basic Educational Skills (CBEST) test. There are many sites that offer the test all over the state. This test covers basic skills in math, reading comprehension and writing. http://www.cbest.nesinc.com/
3. To be fingerprinted and have a background check from the Department of Justice. This generally costs around $50. Some school districts may reimburse for this fee after you've subbed, so save your receipt.
4. TB immunization test.

If you meet these requirements, you may apply for an Emergency 30-Day Substitute Permit. The substitute permit is valid for a period of one year and allows you to substitute teach on a day-to-day basis for up to 30 days in the same classroom. Please check with each individual school district for employment opportunities and requirements.

It appears that you need a bachelor's degree and to have passed either CBEST or Praxis 1. Other paperwork and security checks are additionally required.

You must have had a minimum of 5 walk-on roles in films produced in the last 3 years and your SAG card must be up-to-date.

I know you were striving for humor, but those type of answers are generally frowned upon here at Mahalo. If you really have a humorous line you'd like to say, add it at the bottom of a good answer. Thanks!
