What are the major causes of Chronic bronchitis?

My neighbor’s mother has been having bouts of cough, for over a month now. She has been to the hospital and the doctor gave her a cough syrup, but after completing the medication the cough persisted, and she had to go for some tests. When the test results came out it was confirmed that she had Chronic bronchitis. She quit smoking some years ago, what could have caused it? Is it contagious?

Sometimes inflammation and thickening of the lining of your bronchial tubes become permanent — a condition known as chronic bronchitis. You're generally considered to have chronic bronchitis if you cough most days for at least three months a year in two consecutive years. Often, however, smokers with chronic bronchitis cough almost every day, even if it's just to "clear their throats" in the morning.
Unlike acute bronchitis, chronic bronchitis is an ongoing, serious disease. Smoking is the major cause, but air pollution and dust or toxic gases in the environment or workplace also can contribute to the condition.

Research has suggested that about 90% of the cases of chronic bronchitis stems from tobacco smoke exposure of some kind. However other types of irritants can also cause chronic bronchitis. There is also the possibility that chronic bronchitis can be caused by repeated acute bronchitis, if the irritant continues to be present.
