Hello @lilbirdie79,
Depression medication may include SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors that improve the levels of serotonin in the brain), atypical antidepressants (that target other neurotransmitters along with serotonin), tricyclic antidepressants (that block the absorption of serotonin and norepinephrine), and MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitors that remove transmitters serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine). The side effects for ALL depression medication are same.
Side effects include feeling sleepy during day time, dry mouth, dizziness, insomnia, difficulty urinating, tingling sensation in the skin, muscle aches, diarrhea, low blood pressure, erectile dysfunction, reduced sexual desire, and even weight gain.
The chances and severity of side effects of antidepressants may increase if you are over 65. Then you have the higher risk for fractures and bone loss. If you are in the last stages of pregnancy, use of antidepressants may lead to mild respiratory problems, tremor and restlessness in the newborn. Teens and adolescents using antidepressants are at higher risk for suicide.
