What are the main differences between American grammar and Canadian grammar?
I know this may sound silly, but I never really thought about there being any differences between the two until now. It makes sense, though. I sometimes write for clients in the UK and Ireland, and the grammar and spelling are sometimes different for UK English than the American diction that I am accustomed to. The same thing goes for Australia.I have probably written for clients from Canada before, but never put a whole lot of thought into the variations of grammar and spelling until now. Today was the first time that I had a client specifically request for me to check for Canadian grammar and spelling of the articles that I am writing for them, and I am kind of at a loss. I don't really know what to look for. I know that I can change the settings in Microsoft Word for different countries, and it will help me out some, but can any of you give me some quick tips or grammar rules to remember here? If you could also point me in the direction of a great quick reference, that would be great as well.

Writers from England, Canada, or anywhere within the British Commonwealth that uses the Brit's preference on grammar and spelling will spell some words differently. Most dictionaries will account the varying spelling with notes to demonstrate the differences but this might not help you when writing on a computer. The following list of words are formatted: American Spelling (British Spelling)
canceled (cancelled)
center (centre)
check (cheque)
color (colour)
criticize (criticise)
gray (grey)
humor (humour)
judgment (judgement)
labor (labour)
license (licence)
realize (realise)
theater (theatre)
tire (tyre)
valor (valour)
These are the common ones I have ran across in my career and education. I know there are more but that is the basic list for common words I can think of off hand.
