What are the life expectancies of the most common household pets?

In my family we have almost all the household pets you can think about. I do not mean dangerous animals, but the common ones we see in almost all homes around such as, dog, cat, hamster, bird and ferret. I usually buy my pets because I adore them, but my brother said I need to know their life expectancies so that I won’t be taken by surprise when one of them dies. Does anyone have an idea of the life expectancies of the most common household pets?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Each breed has a usual left expectancy. Most dogs have a ten to 20 year life expectancy. Most cats have 10 - 16 years that you can expect them to be a part of your family. Tropical birds have a long life expectancy up to 75 years. This makes owning a tropical bird a lifetime commitment.
The individual breeds of dogs and cats will have a more exact range of life. Australian Shepherds have the life range of 12-15 years and that still makes me a little sad to know they have such short lives. I plan on having them longer because I will not make them work out in the pasture where they can be hurt or trampled or over worked by cattle or horses.

I think that life expectancy for pets can vary. While dogs can live between 8 to 16 years and beyond, each breed of dog can be different. We have English Bulldogs and their life expectancy is on the lower side which makes me so sad. 10 years for an English Bulldog can be pushing it. I do not think we take this into consideration when we purchase a pet. I know I sure did not. I researched everything except life expectancy. I have been told that cats can live up to 15 years. Some fish have short life expectancies and some seem to hang in their a long time. We had a Green Winged Macaw for a short time and we were told he would outlive all of us. Unfortunately he was TOO much for me to handle so after a year I had to give him to my uncle who does well with birds.
