What are the largest and most reliable hard drives to put in my Mac Pro? Look for 2TB+, fast and reliable.

Tip for best answer: M$2.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Jason,

I'd second the opinion on the SeaGate Barracuda XT - $350. It meets are three requirements, big, fast, reliable. Right now I don't think you can get a drive bigger than 2TB.

This depends on what you are using the Mac Pro for, which I'm guessing is video production. Then you might want to use an SSD drive for the Operating System, and a large HDD drive(s) for your scratch disk. You could RAID a couple together for max speed or redundancy.

Crucial 256GB SSD - $800

MacPro sled adapter for 2.5" drive. - $48.50

This is the best combination of speed and storage for your Mac Pro.

I´ll go with the Barracuda. They are reputed as the best hard disks on the market for more than 20 years. Most come with 7200 rpm which is somewhat the standard for spinning speed nowadays. They are great.

Avoid Western Digital. I have seen too many of them fail recently, all within a year of purchase.

All the TB hard drives are failing right now. Its just becuase they arent mature yet, they will get better. I personally like samsung drives for my laptops, and WD Caviar BLACK's for my business computers ( 3 enterprise machines) The GB drives are still the most reliable out there in my opinion, but give it a few years, and TB drives will get better.
