What are the hottest video game systems on the market for Christmas?

In addition, which games are the most popular? Break the games down into categories, such as sports, action, etc. Any information you can give on this topic would be appreciated. Thank you for your time!

You're asking for games, not systems, right?

Battle Games:

Call of Duty: Black Ops is coming out in about 15 minutes from when I write this. This is going to be a really hot one, as judged by the drooling of my son and his friends for the last 3-4 months!

Assassin's Creed 3: Brotherhood is a historical battle game set in the Renaissance, but brings the Assassin's Creed game into a mutli-player game level.

Car battle:

Twisted Metal (PS3 only). It was popular 10 years ago when systems were not as sophisticated as now, in around 6 editions. So it has that throwback factor going for it. Old and busted as well as the new hotness. There's really nothing like it on the market right now.

Creative/Adventure
PS3 only: Little Big Planet. It's really hard to even begin to describe, except it's quirky; has great soundtracks; and allows even little kids to create levels with all kinds of wild things to do/navigate. For example, my 5-year-old created one where you had to use a bubbles to make a wheel turn in order to raise an elevator, but you had to then jump on a teetertotter/ramp in order to unlock the elevator! It was easily as complicated as anything as my teens create, but less conventional.

For Xbox 360, Halo Reach. Incorporates first-player shooting action along with space battles.

There's also Medal of Honor for both systems. It's been a popular game for awhile, and the new edition will likely draw lots of buyers from its fans.

I keep my ears open in a house full of gamers (son and friends). And I asked two of them about this question.

Also, as I write this, my son is trying to get his dad to take him down to Game Stop to finish paying off the Black Ops he preordered months ago, so he can qualify for some special codes.

Hehe... Hey T!

Well the question is about systems and games. :)

"What are the hottest video game systems on the market for Christmas?"

Great answer anyway :)

Sorry about that! I saw all the stuff about genres, and thought you meant games. I should be answering questions at midnight. :-) Although answering at midnight makes that LBP2 video even more entertaining than it already is.

With two children who are constant gamers the system on their list this year is of course Kinect for Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 has been a popular system for young gamers who enjoy playing sports games such as NBA live. The Kinect I believe will outshine the Wii system by brining in the action without the use of remotes. If anyone has a Wii they have also experienced a remote flying across the room. How many of us really wear the safety straps.

I second this. Kinect is going to be the new "it thing" Whether it sells well, i do not know, but I've seen videos of it in action, and I think that when Wii 2 eventually comes around, it will use the Kinect as its model.

I think the best Kinect games have been the dance games. They can get complex, but they look like fun and a chance to compete with your friends.

Kinectimals also looks good.

I actually work at a company that's affiliated with Sony, and I can tell you that a hot system for this year is the PSP. Basically, it's the most advanced handheld system on the market right now. As far as games go:

Racing:
- ModNation Racers (A cool "cart" style game that lets you customize your own tracks)

Sports:
- Madden NFL 2011 (football at it's best on a handheld)

RPG:
- Invizimals (battle monsters game with an awesome augmented reality component)

Action:
- Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (combines stealth and action elements... Spike TV Video Game Awards "Handheld of the Year" nominee)

Hope that gives you some ideas!

I'm seeing lots of Xbox 360 and PS3 (and to a lesser extent Wii). I do not see much in the hand held market. If you are looking for something that you can take along with you, the newest options are the PSP and the Nintendo DS. The DS has some very innovative games incorporating it's touch screen and microphone (I'm thinking Zelda Adventure) and the PSP has some surprisingly amazing graphics (Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core RPG). If you go this route, I would have to suggest not getting the PSP Go as you cannot play PSP game cartridges on it. Everything must be downloaded. As for the "system" that is commonly left out, you always have the option of PC. You can play more games on your PC than any other system and most of the time it is compatible with older games (seeing that the new PS3 no longer plays PS2 games). There are also a number of different gaming communities for the PC like Valve's Steam (which gives you all Valve DLC for free) and OnLive, which is a cloud computing program that will allow you to play games without the need to download them.

A few months ago I would have had to say Playstation 3, but then if you liked interactive games like Golf then Wii was your answer. It seems that X Box 360 is the way to go now though. Especially since they have added the Kinetec just in time for Christmas, and the bundle is fairly affordable. The only downfall I would say to Playstation and XBox would be the lack of useable games with their interactive systems...but they will come. Portable, I would have to say PSP but even some of the games I have seen on i-phone/pod are pretty good too. Happy shopping.

The Wii has pretty much died out in popularity because it has been around for so long (though now they're coming out with colors such as red and black). The PS3 is the new star of the show because it's the newest of the bunch and there are so many new games coming out with it. The Xbox 360 is the second oldest on the market (I think, not too sure) so it's been around for awhile and anyone who wanted one most likely has one already.
So I would go with the PS3 for this Christmas season.

Actually Xbox 360 with Kinect is the new star. :) And the version that was designed for Kinect is newer than any PS3.

The order of release was Xbox 360, a year later the PS3 (when the guy got shot in line), and the next day the Wii.
