Hummus contain good fats with Omega 3, iron, Vitamin C, B6, manganese, and copper. Also, it contains folic acid, low glycemic value, large amount of tryptophan, phenylalanine, and tyrosine, which are mood lifters that can also lead to a more satisfying sleep. Wow!

These are the health benefits of hummus:

1. This is an excellent source of fiber that slowly digests and help keep blood sugar levels from rising fast. This is ideal for diabetic individual, those who are resistant to insulin or hypoglycemia.
2. Provide complete protein needed when combines with rice or whole grains.
3. Contains molybdenum, a trace mineral that helps the body detoxify sulfites as well as iron and manganese. This is essential for healthy blood and high energy.

In chickpeas, there is a significant amount of tryptophan, an essential amino acid, which is not common in other legumes, they are also good sources of calcium and magnesium. (reference 1)

An analysis of a recipe that includes canned garbanzos, lemon juice, tahini, garlic, a little water, salt and pepper has the following nutrient values for a 1/2 cup serving:

182 Calories
7.5 g Protein
22 g Carbohydrate
8 g Total fats
1.4 g Unsaturated fats
7.7 mg of Vitamin C - from the lemon juice
21 IU of Vitamin A
1.4 mg Iron
37 mg of Calcium
300 mg Sodium 301 mg
4.4 g Dietary Fiber

This reference does not list the magnesium content, nor does it list health benefits that are accompanied by eating the garlic that are known, including reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, the incidence of colds, and perhaps benefiting our immune systems in a way that can reduce the risk of cancer. (reference 3)
