What are the health benefits of flax seed?

Aside from alpha linolenic acid, flax seed is rich in lignan. Lignan is a type phytoestrogen (antioxidant) and also provides fiber. Researches reveal that lignan in flax seed shows a lot of promise in fighting disease -- including a possible role in cancer prevention especially breast cancer. It is thought that lignan metabolites can bind to estrogen receptors, hence inhibiting the onset of estrogen-stimulated breast cancer.

Recent studies also showed positive benefits of flax seed oil in IBD (Crohn's Disease and Colitis). Flax seed oil seems to be able to heal the inner lining of the inflamed intestines.

Moderately include flax seed in your diet. Indeed, a lot of food products contain flax seed such as bread, cereal and bakery goods. Bakers may use flax seed flour or include flax seed in baking.

Flax seeds have been seen as a "superfood" for centuries. The Roman army used to make bread out of the seeds, which gave them the strength to conquer the known world. Today, science has shown us that the Romans were right- flax is a healthy food with many benefits. It is rich in omega-3 oils, the same that makes fish so healthy for you. This has been seen as helping to reduce cholesterol.
Flax seeds also have been shown to help lower blood pressure. Finally, flax contains alpha linolenic acid, which helps fights diseases, and may even help prevent breast cancer.
With all these benefits, it makes sense to include flax in your diet. You can do this simply by sprinkling ground up flax into your cereal, or on top of your salad!

flaxseed is becoming really popular lately. i know that it is high in omega 3 fatty acids that are supposed to help lower cholesterol and lower risks of things like breast/prostate/colon cancers and heart disease. it also can help reduce inflammation in certain areas of your body. for instance, i am asthmatic and flaxseed helps me breathe more easily. if you look around there are even hair care products that contain flaxseed oil because it helps damaged hair be more manageable. it definitely seems to be a wonder seed. hopefully theyll find even more benefits from it!

Why eat omega-3 fatty acids from flax seed?
Dietary deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids can cause long term damage to human health. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recognized the importance of omega-3 to public health and their importance to coronary health.
Here is a problem:
The omega-3 in American diet has decreased gradually over time with the increased consumption of processed foods. On the other hand dietary levels of Omega-6 fatty acids have increased due to consumption of oils that are rich in omega-6 fatty acids. This dietary imbalance of omega fatty acids has created unfavorable ratio of omega 3:omega 6 in our body.
It is not just the amount of omega-3 consumed but the amount of omega-3 in relation to the amount of omega-6 oils consumed that is important to keep the ratio to a favorable level of 1:4 (omega 3:omega 6).
Solution:
Flaxseed provides one of the only non-animal sources of omega-3 that contains significantly more omega-3 than omega-6. About 57% of total oil in flaxseed is in the form of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an Omega-3 fatty acid that is essential for human health. To improve omega-3 levels and ratio between omega 3 and Omega 6, it is important to consume foods that contain significantly higher levels of omega-3 than omega-6. There are very few foods that do that – Flaxseed is one of them.
The ALA is converted by the body into eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) omega-3s that are found in fish oils. The EPA and DHA are also essential omega-3 fatty acids for human health. The conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA is not a very efficient process in body but remember a diet rich in flax seed, will provide all three omega-3 fatty acids that are essential to healthy human health.

Getting your omega-3s (when the flax seed if ground up) and adding to bulk (insoluble fiber - when not ground up) to aid in relief of constipation.

Flaxseeds contain alpha-linolenic acid, which is a precursor for omega 3 fatty acids, which are associated with improved outcomes in cardiovascular disease. The Mayo clinic has a good writeup and assessment of the evidence behind the health claims. Here's an excerpt:

"Flaxseed and its derivative flaxseed oil/linseed oil are rich sources of the essential fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid, which is a biologic precursor to omega-3 fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid. Although omega-3 fatty acids have been associated with improved cardiovascular outcomes, evidence from human trials is mixed regarding the efficacy of flaxseed products for coronary artery disease or hyperlipidemia."
