What are the health benefits of cayenne?

As I have mentioned elsewhere, I like to use a lot of hot sauce in my cooking, and I will eat hot sauce on just about everything. My favorite variety of hot sauce is Franks Red Hot, which is a cayenne pepper sauce. I know that Dr. Oz recommends that people eat egg whites and cayenne pepper sauce for breakfast in one of his diet programs. He also mentions this in his book entitled ''YOU on a Diet''. All of this has me curious about the health benefits of cayenne pepper. What does this spice do for us and why is is so highly recommended?

These are the major benefits of Cayenne Peppers:

1. This is great for circulatory system for it feeds the necessary elements into the cell structure of the arteries, veins and capillaries so that these structures will regain its elasticity and helps adjusts the blood pressure to become normal in range.
It also has benefits in the digestive system particularly the stomach and intestine. It helps cure ulcers in these organs because it improves blood circulation. It also produces natural warmth in the body and stimulates peristaltic movement of the intestines which aid in absorption of nutrients and elimination of waste materials.

2. Cayenne also regulates circulation of blood from the head to the feet so that the pressure is balanced. It also has an immediate effect on the heart which also extends to the arteries, capillaries and nerves as well.

3. It gives warmth and dilates specific varicose veins and balances the pressure] in the arterial and venous system.

4. It helps alleviate allergies, muscle cramps, improve digestive processes, helps a person to become active and increase energy and vigor, accelerates healing of wounds and less tissue scarring.

5. It acts as counter-irritant and brings blood to the surface and allow toxins to be emerge and be disposed of.

6. The main ingredient of Cayenne called capsaicin was found to destroy prostrate cancer cells. This is according to an article by Reuters dated March 16, 2006.

7. This can also be a good cure for heartburn

8. This is also used for atonic gout and in paralysis such as dropsy. It can be used as treatment for tympanitisand fever.

9. This can cure sore throat by mixing this with honey and gargle.

10. It will make an excellent remedy for cold by mixing with slippery elm and molasses or honey and take in doses throughout the day. Also used in coughs and sore throat.

Besides being popular for its herbal and natural healing properties, there is documented evidence by the American Association of Cancer Research indicating cayenne pepper being an effective deterrent against cancer.

Studies conducted by Japanese researchers confirm the above and also indicate that capsaicin, the main chemical substance in the cayenne herb, through some mechanism destroys the androgen-independent prostate cancer cells in the male body.

In an article published in Reuters on March 16, 2006, entitled, "Hot Pepper Kills Prostate Cancer Cells in Study", Dr. Soren Lehmann of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the UCLA School of Medicine states that "capsaicin had a profound anti-proliferative effect on human prostate cancer cells in culture. It caused 80 percent of the prostate cancer cells growing in mice to commit suicide in a process known as apoptosis".

Researches from Japan also discovered that cayenne pepper has the ability to decrease the growth of prostate tumors considerably.

Research and studies are currently mainly limited to prostate cancers and tumors but one should note that all other cancerous cells are similar and these properties of cayenne could be extended to avoid development of all other cancers.

Arthritis – cayenne pepper health benefits also include arthritic conditions

A clinical study found that cayenne health benefits extend to arthritis too. In the study, 113 arthritic persons were examined for the effect of capsaicin cream. The study found that those who were treated with capsaicin experienced more reduction of pain at the end of the first and third months. They also felt less tenderness and pain in the joints during passive range of motion.

Another study of 21 persons found that capsaicin cream, applied topically, reduced feelings of pain and tenderness in osteoarthritis patients by about 40%; there was apparently little or no effect on those who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis.

Fibromyalgia – health benefits of cayenne pepper extend to the sufferers of Fibromyalgia too

Cayenne health benefits were also ascertained in a particular study on 45 Fibromyalgia patients. The study, which lasted for 4 weeks, found that the topical application of capsaicin cream (0.025%) reduced feelings of tenderness at trigger points. Those who were treated also experienced significant improvement in grip strength.

Headaches – a common ailment which cayenne benefits too

Two studies found that topical application of capsaicin cream to the nostril had a beneficial effect on cluster headaches. 57% of those treated reported feeling better, while only 17% of those treated with a placebo experienced a positive effect. This is quite a clear indication that cayenne health benefits also include the treatment of headaches.

Psoriasis – cayenne health benefits also extend to skin conditions

The health benefits of cayenne pepper also cover Psoriasis. Three separate studies showed that treatment with capsaicin reduced feelings of itching, scaling and erythema (redness of the skin caused by capillary congestion).
