What are the first applications you install when you get a new computer? Why?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

1. iPhoto. I have few thousand family pictures that need to be maintained.
2. iTunes to manage all my podcasts and music.
3. MS Office. It's a standard that hasn't gone away in 20+ years. I got tired of trying other things for recipes, letters, spreadsheets, etc. only to have them pack up and go out of business. I can't tell you how many times I've done the file conversion shuffle!
4. Reunion. It's family tree software, a must for my ongoing family history projects.
5. Some puzzle or card game. Right now it's a solitaire game. I'm not much of a gamer, but I need something to endure phone hold time without completely losing my focus.
6. Some sort of Twitter standalone. I'm still experimenting, and have no real preference yet.
7. The Mahalo Answers standalone. It has a customized interface, a pop up that lets me know a new question has come in (although I customized that one for my preferences, as a new question comes in now about every 3 seconds!), and my stats all in a single, clean-looking column. On the right. Semi-transparent until I mouse over.
Experience and a wicked good imagination!

M$Then my browser, and then Open Office. That covers me for immediate needs.
Then my Evernote, from which I can pull the rest of the programs I need. That would cover things like iTunes, Gimp, Photoshop, Illustrator, and bunches of Opensource things.
Then bunches of specific programs I use, from educational things like Phun and Startwrite, to Live Cookbook.

M$For work, I set up Microsoft Office. I'm not really a fan, but everybody uses it, so I have to as well. I have Quicken for financial matters, and iTunes for music/podcasts.
For utilities, I get Weatherpulse (because Weatherbug is too slow and has too many ads) and RealAlternative (as an alternative to RealPlayer, which is way too bloated for me.
That just about does it for the essentials.

M$The first application is Firefox. I don't like or trust IE and you need a browser to download anything else. The second is OpenOffice. That takes care of most duties. Third is Thunderbird, if I am going to use that computer for my email. Then Picasa, because I do a lot of photography and I couldn't do without it.
After that, it's on to games!
(notice that I didn't spend a dime until I got to the games part)
Just bought one recently. (My first computer was a TRS-80 Model I, I've lost count of how many since)
