What are the fall holidays?

According to tradition, why do kids trick or treat on Halloween? Is dressing up for Halloween only popular in American culture or is this practice done in other countries?

Of course the well-known fall holidays are Thanksgiving, Halloween, Veterans Day.

As for why children dress up in costumes and go out Trick or Treating on Halloween. Believe it or not Halloween actually has a religious origin. The word Halloween derived from the Catholic faith, which used the term for the night of October 31st as All Hallows Eve, which of course is the evening before, All Saints Day, which is November 1. The dressing up in costumes started as a Celtic Irish ritual on All Hallows Eve to keep the living from being possessed by the dead, which they believe walked the earth on that night. The ritual included going around making a much noise as possible to keep the spirits away.

Eventually the Romans would adopt these Celtic practices on Halloween themselves and over time changed some of the customs. By 1840 the customs of Halloween made it to the United States when the Irish started to immigrate over to America during the Potato Famine.

As for the custom of Trick or Treating, it apparently also began with the Irish Celtic, who believed that going door to door to beg for an offering helped to ward off the dead spirits.
